update [10 Dec 2007|06:19pm]
[ music | Super Furry Animals "Hello Sunshine" ]

I haven't been on here in a long while. So instead of studying for my first set of finals, I was looking through past entries and laughing. For example, the advice people gave me about college and Bellingham, that has proven to be incredibly true:

"the first quarter away is ALWAYS the hardest." -Melena

and

"Mmmmm, Bellingham. I enjoy it up there. Get ready to start liking Busch Ice and Canadian pot." -Ryan Tone

I'm truly enjoying college. It's nothing like I anticipated, and there have been some moments where I've been incredibly frustrated (mostly with math and feeling lonely), but overall it's been a totally enlightening experience. I'm finally feeling intellectually challenged, and it's amazing to around people who get my obscure literary or film references. And the longer I'm up here, the more I'm beginning to feel a part of this city and school. Thankfully, I don't have a crazy roommate (even though she does listen to Hanson occasionally). I'm absolutely in love with my British Literature class, and even though I am an utter reject at math and quantitative reasoning, my love of literature has only been solidified.

So after that somewhat vague update, I'm going back to studying.

She just goes a little mad sometimes. We all go a little mad sometimes. Haven't you? [25 Oct 2005|10:34pm]

Listen to the song of the day if you like Simon and Garfunkel. It is spectacular.

Would it be wrong if I found Norman Bates attractive? I put that in question form so that if you think I am sick, you can always muse, "Well, she put it into a question, which doesn't outright ADMIT to her crazed infatuation."

Halloween is coming so I have to face my Norman Bates thing again.

Too bad he's such a momma's boy.

Hoo hoo hoo.

This is such a good time of year. The fog blankets the water like a ghost ship should emerge from it, and the air has a crispness that seems like winter is holding on to the fringes of summer.

There's something inherently contemplative about Autumn. It's my season, I think. It's hard to really judge that though, with school being so awful this time of year.

One of these days I'm going to make a decent update, I swear.

Hey Mambo [23 Oct 2005|01:54pm]
[ mood | busy ]
[ music | Bad Company "Feel Like Makin' Love" ]

Italian is the most beautiful language. To me, it has the fluidity of Spanish and the romance of French. I saw an independent film in Italian yesterday called "Ricordati di me (Remember Me, My Love)," and it was fantastic. Like an Italian "American Beauty," sort of. I guess that'd be "Italian Beauty." Anyways, it was great and you should all rent it. Or I could make some spaghetti and we could watch it together.

I followed that movie with a Lifetime piece of crap about a high school track star who gets raped by her coach.

There's something about Lifetime that just makes you feel better about your own life. Their tagline should be "Lifetime: Making menstrual women feel better about their own lives since 1992."

Now I have 5 massive homework assignments to do and I am seriously considering taking Tuesday off as a mental health day because that is when they all are due. I'll think about it, realize how uncharacteristically Stephanie it is, and probably refrain.

Rehearsals are going well. We're going to have full Victorian costuming and I am ecstatic.

So guess who snagged the lead in the upcoming Wilson High School production of "The Matchmaker?"

Some chick named Stephanie Skaggs. Doubt you've ever heard of her.

Insanity [14 Oct 2005|09:51pm]
There's a reason those Harry Potter kids aren't American. If they were, the stories would be more properly titled "Harry Potter and the Den of Underaged Fornication" or "Harry Potter and the Experimental Misuse of Pharmaceutical Drugs" or "Harry Potter's Illicit Love Affair with an Older Man" or perhaps "Harry Potter and the Bad Acid Trip." They wouldn't give two craps about the evil lurking within the walls of their school. They would conclude that it was some scheme concocted by the "man" to keep them in line.

Just look what we've done with the films!!

It's "Harry Potter and the Disillusioned Emo Kids."

If Harry Potter was just a regular, American kid, none of it would make sense. No one could picture Joe NextDoor carving past the ingrained teenage apathy to care enough to make a difference that wasn't self-serving.

And that's my rant.

Not to say that one culture is better than the other by any means, they both have their pros and cons. Hell, I've never even met someone my age who is British. Maybe it is just the way we view their society in comparison to ours.

Elton John...music...philosophy... [29 Sep 2005|08:40pm]
[ mood | contemplative ]
[ music | Elton John "Candle in the Wind" ]

Elton John has the most melodious voice. I've been listening to his greatest hits a lot lately. They are perfect for the kind of mood I am in...a mood I can't describe, but Elton seems to do it perfectly. If you ever want some insight into who I am, listen to that CD. Or Coldplay's "Rush of Blood to the Head." Or anything by Jack Johnson. Or the Garden State soundtrack. Or Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata." Marilyn Manson's "This is the New Shit." Don McLean's "American Pie."

There are just songs that speak to our souls. I'm sure we all have a song or CD like that.

Music is a magical kind of expression. I wish I was better at making it. As it is, I just appreciate it. Everything but screamo and gangster rap.

These are the times that try men's souls.

I forget who said that. Some dead American revolutionary in the literature book. Lately that quote has been running through my head. It's so dramatic.

Sometimes I hate the things I say because I know how it must sound to other people.

But we can never sacrifice who we are for anyone else. I just wish the people I knew would understand that. And there are so few people who have an accurate representation of who I am...I never know if I am the only one who feels misunderstood or if it is everyone out there who feels like no one really knows who they are.

WOW...this entry was vague and random...

For those interested parties: I got my book, it is beautiful and really shiny (literally, it has a silver cover), and excellent from what I've read.

[27 Sep 2005|07:35pm]

I am a giddy school girl over the fact that the 6th Outlander book came out today, and it is sailing to me as we speak, via Amazon.com.

You don't have to understand my giddiness.

But those who've read them do. We're like a weird, sub-culture of people on the internet who are obsessed with the books. It's like Harry Potter...with a smaller, older fan base.

I have a 3.99 G.P.A!! Fuck my chances of getting into Yale! [18 Sep 2005|07:43pm]
This weekend was amazing. It was the first time I went "real camping" with Tara, Becca, Lacee, Mel, and Adam (real camping, according to Tara, is when there is no toilet. That's right folks, you quickly get used to using the woods).

We felt infinite on numerous occasions.

But, as they say, what happens camping stays camping.

Lil' doggie.

Oh yeah, and somehow I made it to the top 3 for homecoming with Becca. It doesn't make sense, because I told all my friends to vote for Becca, but hey I'll take it. No matter where the chips fall, everything will be splendid.

Things lately usually are. Splendid, that is.

I haven't slept. Contemplation ensues. [11 Sep 2005|03:45pm]
Mysteries of the Universe

-Why do the words "Let's just pull an all-nighter!" sound so logical at 5 a.m. when you are with your friends?

-Why do we all drink coffee, when it really tastes pretty awful? Of course, this is justified with "it is an acquired taste," which really means that it is awful but your taste buds soon become deadened to it.

-Is it physically possible to spontaneously combust from being unnecessarily stressed out?

-Why can't kittens just stay that size?

-What is it about human nature that we constantly feel the need to prove ourselves to other people?

-Why is Chad Micheal Murray so goddam hot? And on a similar note, why is his name spelled that way but pronounced "Mur-ee?" And why does he always play the same character in everything he's in? The brooding, yet quick-witted guy with a dark past.

-And who decides what's important or attractive? We live in the only culture that doesn't respect our elders, no matter how socially important they were, but we are quick to lavish praise on emaciated teenage girls who are in crappy movies, until they get fat, that is.

- How can you ever be sure that a moment of clarity about your future is going to actually last?

Find out next week on...Stephanie's Crazy Life!

P.S. Saturday night was awesome, I'm just really tired from total lack of sleep.

P.P.S. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, TARA!!! YOU'RE MY BOO!

EDIT: Me being a douche bag for Spirit Week! )

Technology rant. [28 Aug 2005|10:34pm]
My computer, the dear old dinosaur running on ancient software, may be on its last legs. For no apparent reason, when I got on today, the colors were all weird (and I can't change them the normal way yet, it is stuck at 16 bit for no reason), and everything was HUGE. I suddenly realized that if I lose all my files (about 4 or 5 years worth of school work, pictures, MP3's, writing, etc.), I will seriously be traumatized. I need to back them up. But I don't have any blank disks right now and the programs aren't working properly anyways. I ran an anti-virus scan, and it will probably be ok. But I hate the air of uncertainty.

It is kind of cool though how this has distorted all my pictures...like this:

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Technology is an addiction. Mankind can get along perfectly well without it, but once it is exposed to technology, it is nigh to impossible to stop using it. Technology is probably going to be our destruction. I was watching this thing on the History Channel the other day (shut up, it's cool) called "Angels: Good and Evil," and it documented the history of angels in various religions and lore. It was really interesting...until they got up to the present, and they showed all these mammoth buildings and people carrying briefcases talking on cell phones and the narration didn't have any fun facts about us...merely that there was little room for angels or morality in a world where technology ruled. Now, I'm not particularly religious, nor do I think everyone has to be, but that kind of depressed me. This sudden fall from the "dark ages" of living in a world ruled by religion into a world ruled by computers.

Of course, I am not one to talk. I sit here, typing this away at my computer, and I get my history from a television show. I just know that I would be devastated if my computer crashed and I lost my mementos. Imagine if the world's computers crashed...

Sorry for the rant. It was a weird day. The combination of it being really hot, and yet still overcast, makes people bitchy. I've seen it firsthand.

Oooh yeah, I started a writing journal, mainly for myself but you can check it out sometime: [info]mercurially.

What are these kids doing in that photobooth?

Oh, the humanity! )

Oh yes, and my wisdom teeth surgery is tomorrow. I hope I don't die, but if I do, I'm going to construct a "Last Will and Testament" of sorts tonight. Just in case. Never can be too careful, eh? Just make sure my parents sue the fuck out the oral surgeon for malpractice and that they buy a yacht.

This conversation made me laugh in sad way.

Me: Hey, Matt. My surgery is tomorrow. Remember when I didn't do anything for like three days when you got yours taken out, and I nursed you back to health?
Matt: Is Mom taking tomorrow off?
Me: Yeah.
Matt: Hmm. Maybe she'll be able to take me to get my cell phone.
